Warm up - The Seven Seas (10-15 mins)

The Seven Seas - Without a football players will embark on an adventure in the depths of the ocean, to explore the underwater world. They will encounter various obstacles and creatures as they dive into the Seven Seas.

Set up

Create a large square or rectangular area with blue cones. On the inside of the blue area use yellow cones to make a slightly smaller square or rectangular area called “Football Island”. Place down red cones in one third of the island, green cones in another third and the final third with white cones.

Storytelling Instructions

“Imagine that you are brave divers venturing into the mysterious realm of the Seven Seas. Get ready to navigate through the underwater landscape, facing challenges and encounters along the way. Listen carefully to the instructions and move with precision and agility to protect your territory!”

Instructions

Set up the following obstacles and creatures:

Crabs (red cones) - Players will side-step through the crabs, imitating their movements to blend in and con- fuse the opponents.

Seaweed (green cones) - Players will hop through the seaweed, changing direction and swapping feet half- way through to avoid entanglement.

Jellyfish (blue bibs) - Players will jump over the jellyfish, ensuring they do not collide with other players jumping over the same jellyfish.

After exploring the ocean without a football, Players will now get one oxygen tank (football) each. This time players will continue exploring the ocean with their oxygen tanks, If a player crashes into an obstacle or another player they must return to the safety area or they must dribble around the perimeter of Football Island to “refill” their tank before rejoining the game.

Players should look around for “spaces, not near faces” to navigate through the obstacles, maintaining awareness of their surroundings.

Emphasise taking small, controlled touches to keep the ball close, simulating defenders protecting their territory. Remind players that if their oxygen tank goes too far away they won't be able to breathe underwater.

Technical Development - Under the Sea (10-15 mins)

Under the Sea - Equipped with their oxygen tanks (footballs), players will dive into the depths of the ocean and explore the underwater world, honing their defensive skills.

Set up

Create a large square or rectangular area with blue cones. On the inside of the blue area use yellow cones to make a slightly smaller square or rectangular area called “Football Island”. Each player must have one football each.

Storytelling Instructions

“Now, you are skilled underwater defenders, guarding your territory in the mesmerizing depths of the ocean. Put on your diving gear, grab your oxygen tanks, and prepare to defend with precision and composure!”

Coaching Points

Instructions

Players will ‘swim’ around the ocean floor, while Listening out for different commands from the teacher. Incorporate the following movements:

“Whirlpool!” - Players will spin around the ball to change direction swiftly, confusing opponents and maintaining their defensive position.

“Puffer Fish!” - Players will puff their cheeks and turn in a new direction quickly, using explosive movements to intercept and disrupt the opponent’s attack.

“Crabs!” - Players will use the inside of their feet to manoeuvre like agile crabs, moving sideways to block passing lanes and apply pressure on the opponent.

“Mermaid!” - Players will sit on the ball with their legs in front, imitating the graceful posture of a mermaid, maintaining a stable stance.

“Sharks!” - Players will dribble quickly, channelling the predatory nature of sharks, combining speed and defensive awareness.

“Seaweed!”- Players will perform toe taps imagining there is seaweed stuck to their feet. Quick feet will allow them to protect their oxygen tanks.

Add obstacles such as sea urchins (cones/bibs) that players must avoid. If a player collides with a sea urchin or another player, their oxygen tank bursts, and they must return to the safety area or they must dribble around the perimeter of Football Island to “refill” their tank before rejoining the game.

Encourage players to take small touches and keep the ball close, ensuring control and precision in defensive movements.

Guide players to use different parts of their feet, such as the sole, inside, and outside, to maintain control of the ball while manoeuvring through obstacles.

Promote effective communication and support among teammates to help players return to the game quickly after “refilling” their oxygen tanks.

Play that should have awareness of where everyone else and the obstacles are. Players should take preventative measures to ensure that nobody crashes into their oxygen tanks.

Skill practise - Finding Nemo (10-15 mins)

Finding Nemo - In the vastness of the ocean, players will engage in a defensive challenge while searching for Nemo. Each player has an oxygen tank (football) and will dribble around, searching under the coral reefs (cones) to find Nemo.

Set up

Create a large square or rectangular area with blue cones. On the inside of the blue area use yellow cones to make a slightly smaller square or rectangular area called ‘Football Island’. Each player must have one football each. Spread out lots of different coloured cones (corals) around the area and hide an orange ‘fish’ (toy/bib/small object) under one of the cones.

Storytelling Instructions

“In the mysterious depths of the ocean, Nemo has gone missing, and it’s your mission to find him. Prepare to defend yourself while embarking on a quest to locate the elusive Nemo!”

Instructions

Progressions

Coaching Points

Players will dribble their oxygen tanks (footballs) around Football Island, searching for Nemo. When they Are searching for Nemo under the coral reefs they are only allowed to use their feet to control their oxygen tanks. While looking under a coral they must call out “Nemo!” If they are unsuccessful they must put the coral back down and continue searching under another coral.

While players are searching for Nemo the teacher or selected players, without a football, will go around Football Island trying to kick oxygen tanks away to slow down the search for Nemo.

Introduce Dory (blue fish) or any other additional marine creatures or colourful fish for the players to look for.

Increase the amount of players kicking away oxygen tanks to make it more challenging for the searching team.

Introduce a time limit to add a sense of urgency and excitement to the game.

Emphasise the importance of maintaining defensive focus while keeping an eye out for Nemo and other marine creatures.

Encourage players to communicate and coordinate with their teammates, alerting each other when a creature has been found, or which corals have already been searched.

Guide players to use their defensive skills to protect their football while searching for Nemo and other marine creatures.

Players kicking oxygen tanks out of Football Island should target one player at a time.

To prolong the game the teacher can keep Nemo until the later stages of the game and then hide nemo under a coral.

Encourage players to call for Nemo or Dory for increased enjoyment.

Remind players they are only allowed to use their feet and they should keep their oxygen tank with them at all times otherwise they won’t be able to breathe underwater.

Conditioned Game - Sharks vs Minnows (15-20 mins)

Sharks vs Minnows - In the vast expanse of the ocean, players will participate in a game of Sharks vs Minnows, where defenders aim to eliminate attackers by kicking their balls out of the playing area.

Set up

Create a large square or rectangular area with blue cones. On the inside of the blue area use yellow cones to make a slightly smaller square or rectangular area called “Football Island”. Choose two opposite side for the minnows to swim between.

Storytelling Instructions

“Welcome to the ultimate battle in the depths of the ocean! The powerful sharks will defend their territory against the swift minnows. Get ready for an intense showdown!”

Instructions

Progressions

Coaching Points

Designate a group of players as sharks (defenders) and the rest as minnows (attackers). Minnows will attempt to dribble their footballs from one side of the playing area to the other while avoiding the sharks who are positioned in the middle of Football Island.

If a shark kicks a minnow’s football out of the area, the minnow becomes “seaweed” and cannot move but can kick other footballs out to assist the sharks.

Rotate players between the roles of sharks and minnows to ensure equal participation.

Increase the number of sharks to raise the defensive challenge for the minnows.

Encourage the minnows to come up with strategies and work together to overcome the sharks’ defensive pressure.

Sharks should target one minnow at a time.

Introduce a time limit for the minnow to swim across Football Island adding a sense of urgency and excitement.

Guide the sharks to demonstrate patience and coordination in targeting and pressuring the minnows effectively.

Encourage the minnows to utilise their dribbling skills and agility to evade the sharks and advance toward the other side of the playing area.

Emphasise the importance of teamwork and communication among the minnows to support each other in overcoming the defensive efforts of the sharks.

Sharks should try and protect the area behind them, if necessary they could work together as a team to stop agile minnows.

Progress Tracker

Storytelling Instructions
