Warm up - Safari Park Adventure (10-15 mins)

Safari Park Adventure - Prepare for an exciting journey through Football Island’s Safari Park! Imagine you and your teammates embarking on a thrilling wildlife adventure, exploring the vast savannah and observing the magnificent animals that roam the land. Get your imaginary cameras ready to capture the best animal movements and learn from their incredible agility!

Set up

Create a large square or rectangular area with blue cones. On the inside of the blue area use yel- low cones to make a slightly smaller square or rectan- gular area called “Football Island”.

Storytelling Instructions

“As you enter the Safari Park, envision the vast open plains, lush greenery, and fascinating wildlife surrounding you. Your mission is to observe the animals and imitate their movements, capturing their essence with your imaginary cameras. Listen carefully as the Teacher calls out the names of various animals. Each animal represents a different movement for you to emulate and photograph.”

Instructions

The teacher will call out the name of an animal, and players must move like that animal, imitating their unique movements.

“Kangaroo!” - Jump. Emulate the powerful jumps of a kangaroo, bounding across the imaginary savannah.

“Horse!” - Gallop gracefully like a horse, mirroring their rhythmic and elegant stride.

“Crabs!” - Sidestep. Move sideways like a crab, taking quick and nimble steps.

“Flamingos!” - Balance. Stand on one leg, balancing like a graceful flamingo. Focus on stability and control.

“Giraffe!” - Stretch your arms up on tiptoes, mimicking the long neck of a giraffe reaching for leaves.

“Cheetahs!” - Sprint with speed and agility like a cheetah, demonstrating bursts of quick acceleration.

“Turtles!” - Move slowly and deliberately like a turtle, maintaining composure and control.

As the children are moving around like animals the teacher will now identify the best animal movements for the children to photograph as good examples.

Players should look around for spaces to move into and avoid getting too close to other explorers.

Develop spatial awareness to navigate safely and avoid collisions.

Observe and learn from the movements of different animals, focusing on their agility, balance, and coordination.

Encourage players to demonstrate the characteristics and unique traits of each animal through their movements.

Maintain a high level of engagement and enjoyment by quickly calling out the animal instructions.

Technical Development - Jungle Passing (15-25 mins)

Jungle Passing - Prepare for an adventure deep into the heart of Football Island’s dense jungle. In pairs, you and your teammate will navigate through the jungle foliage, passing the ball through narrow openings while being wary of mischievous animals ready to snatch it away!

Set up

Create a large square or rectangular area with blue cones. On the inside of the blue area use yellow cones to make a slightly smaller square or rectangular area called “Football Island”. Create lots of gates with cones inside the island for pairs to pass the ball through.

Storytelling Instructions

“As you enter the mysterious jungle, envision towering trees and tangled vines surrounding you. Your goal is to pass the ball through the narrow gaps between the jungle branch- es, avoiding the clutches of mischievous animals lurking in the shadows. Stay focused and work together to keep the ball under control as you venture deeper into the jungle!”

Instructions

Set up the “jungle” area using two cones placed a short distance apart, symbolising the dense branches, if possible use green cones.

Players should be put into pairs and stand on either side of the “branches”.
Pairs should pass the ball back and forth between the branches (cones), aiming to keep it under control.

Encourage players to use both feet to pass and receive the ball, developing versatility in their passing skills.

Players should experiment with different parts of your feet, such as the sole, inside, and outside, to control and direct the ball. Focus on firm and accurate passes, ensuring your partner can receive the ball smoothly.

Players should shout “pass” when they’re ready to receive the ball.

Can you use different parts of your feet, such as the inside and outside, to control and pass the ball effectively?

How can you improve your touches to maintain control while passing through the jungle?

Can you challenge yourself by using only your weaker foot to pass and receive the ball?

What strategies can you employ to outwit the mischievous animals and keep the ball in your possession?

Encourage players to take a controlled touch when receiving the ball, allowing for better control and decision-making.

When passing the ball players should aim to get the ball in-between the branches (cones).

Emphasise the importance of using different parts of the feet to pass the ball, promoting versatility and skill development.

Focus on accurate and well-weighted passes to ensure successful exchanges with your partner.

Stay composed and aware of mischievous animals, adapting your passing technique and movement to protect the ball.

Conditioned Game - Funky Chicken Chase (15-25 mins)

Funky Chicken Chase - Prepare for an unexpected visitor on Football Island, a mischievous “funky chicken” has arrived! As a team, it’s your mission to chase away the funky chicken by passing your footballs at it. Every successful hit below the knee will make the chicken drop a feather. Work together, aim true, and restore peace to Football Island!

Set up

Create a large square or rectangular area with blue cones. On the inside of the blue area use yellow cones to make a slightly smaller square or rectangular area called “Football Island”. Teacher or selected students are to hold as many different coloured bibs as possible.

Storytelling Instructions

“The tranquillity of Football Island is disrupted by the arrival of the funky chicken. Its colourful feathers ruffle in the wind as it scampers around, causing mischief. It’s up to you and your teammates to drive the funky chicken away by hitting it with your footballs. Aim carefully, kick with precision, and knock off its feathers one by one!”

Coaching Points

The Teacher or selected student will take on the role of the funky chicken, holding different-coloured bibs as feathers.

Each player must have their own football.

Players pass their footballs at the funky chicken, aiming to hit it below the knee.

Every successful hit causes the funky chicken to drop a feather.

The game continues until all the feathers have been knocked off, signalling the departure of the funky chicken and the players’ victory.

Can you challenge yourself by using your weaker foot to pass the ball at the funky chicken?

Increase the level of difficulty by introducing multiple funky chickens.

What strategies can you employ to improve your accuracy and increase your chances of hitting the funky chicken below the knee?

Introduce a time limit for players to create a sense of urgency and excitement. This will add an additional challenge and require players to make quick decisions while maintaining their dribbling and passing skills.

Restart the game whenever necessary.

Encourage players to keep the ball on the ground and focus on accurate passes to hit the funky chicken.

Emphasise the importance of using different parts of the feet to control the ball and execute accurate passes.
Encourage players to move into spaces and come closer to the funky chicken before attempting a pass, promoting a combination of dribbling and passing skills.

Remind players that they cannot use their hands during the game, and if they miss the funky chicken, they must retrieve the ball using their feet only and dribble closer before attempting another pass.

For increased enjoyment of the players, encourage the funky chicken to make chicken noises as they lose their feathers.

Progress Tracker

Storytelling Instructions

"Get ready to step through the portal and teleport to different worlds, from dodging speeding cars to mimicking jungle animals, adopting superhero powers in a vibrant cityscape, diving into underwater adventures, and exploring outer space. Each game will challenge your skills and teamwork as you navigate through these unique landscapes. Listen carefully to the instructions, remember your training, and move with precision and agility to overcome each challenge and protect your territory!"

Instructions

In the final session of the term, students will revisit and attempt to improve the skills they have learned throughout the term. They will demonstrate their ability to remember and apply previously taught skills while continuing to develop and refine them. Teachers can use the progress tracker to identify areas of weakness and provide targeted guidance. This session aims to ensure students consolidate their prior learning and make tangible advancements in their sports abilities.
